Companies Centene Corp FollowJuly 28 (Reuters) - Centene Corp (CNC.N) said on Friday it was working to enroll people back into government-backed Medicaid plans after the end of pandemic-relief measures left hundreds of thousands of members without coverage. Medicaid memberships, the largest contributor to Centene's revenue, were hit by the removal of pandemic-related relief measures on April 1 that rendered several members ineligible for insurance coverage. Centene lost a little more than 260,000 Medicaid members in the second quarter due to redetermination, and had around 16 million members under Medicaid as of June 30. The company on Friday, however, beat Wall Street estimates for second-quarter profit, helped by strong membership growth in its commercial marketplace business even as a fall in Medicaid memberships hurt. On an adjusted basis, the company earned $2.10 per share in the second quarter, above estimates of $2.03.

The warning also dragged down shares of rival health insurers that largely benefited from delayed non-urgent surgeries such as hip and knee replacements and hospital staffing shortages that had further led to fewer procedures. UnitedHealth, at a Goldman Sachs healthcare conference, highlighted elevated demand for outpatient medical procedures, particularly related to knees and hips, from patients in Medicare health plans meant for those aged 65 and above. UnitedHealth also expects its full-year medical loss ratio at the upper end of its forecast. UnitedHealth's 18.51 forward 12-month price-to-earnings ratio - a common benchmark for valuing stocks - is higher than rival Cigna Corp's (CI.N) 10.29 and CVS Health Corp (CVS.N) 8.26. Shares of Humana Inc (HUM.N) fell 7%, while Elevance Health and CVS Health Corp's (CVS.N) fell more than 3% each in premarket trading.

May 3 (Reuters) - CVS Health Corp (CVS.N) said on Wednesday it would pause its recent acquisition spree as it focuses on integrating purchases of healthcare service provider Signify Health and primary care provider Oak Street Health. CEO Karen Lynch said CVS will focus on integrating Signify and Oak Street with its other businesses in the near term. CVS cut its full-year profit forecast on Wednesday to account for transaction and integration costs related to the two deals, and its shares fell 3%. The earlier-than-expected closing of the Oak Street deal on Tuesday is likely to result in increased interest costs for the year, analysts said. Morningstar analyst Julie Utterback said investors might be disappointed that the company pushed down its profit forecast after completing the Oak Street acquisition this week.

Nov 2 (Reuters) - CVS Health Corp (CVS.N) on Wednesday forecast a 2023 profit below Wall Street estimates and said it hoped to mitigate the hit from a performance rating decline for its most popular Medicare plan by encouraging members to shift to other plans. read more CVS took a pre-tax charge of $5.2 billion in the third quarter related to the settlement. The settlement price, which was below investor expectations, according to Evercore ISI analyst Elizabeth Anderson, and other measures announced by the company helped lift CVS Health shares nearly 5%. CVS' health insurance business as well as peers Elevance Health (ELV.N) and UnitedHealth (UNH.N) have benefited from a slow recovery in elective procedures and a fall in COVID cases that has kept costs in check.
